The History of RCE

Music has been a part of Rick Clark all of his life. Throughout his career as a musician and DJ he’s played with or opened up for such national artists as Pieces of a Dream, The Winans, Meli’sa Morgan, Roy Ayers, and Shawn Allen of R&B group Pure Soul. He has also performed with virtually every musician in Pittsburgh, and has a vast knowledge of all genres of music.

Rick Clark grew up in the Shadyside/East Liberty area of Pittsburgh. His mother nurtured his passion for music when at the age of 4 years old she observed him playing the theme music from “Batman” on a toy piano. His stepfather, a garbage collector, would bring home broken instruments that he had found along his route, and Rick began to fix them up and play them. By his high school years, Rick had learned to play several instruments including guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, saxaphone, and clarinet. He was also a part of the high school choir.

Rick’s first DJ job was at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. He got the job before he even had DJ equipment, so he had to wing it. The function turned out to be a success, with multiple offers for more performances. Rick was very busy between his performances as a DJ and musician until The onset of the Pandemic. Rick had started First Fridays in Pittsburgh, a night where the mature crowd could come out and listen to Old School music. He was actually slated for a Triple-Header weekend; DJing at an after-party for R&B singer Joe concert, a First Fridays show, and a Serious Inquiry Jazz Band Reunion. COVID-19 put a halt to the entire weekend.

Never one to slow down, Rick thought about finding a way to continue to provide music for his audience. After much trial and error, he has developed a system where he can stream music virtually and take requests via chat! This is a unique feature and he has been very successful thus far.
